MOBILE : SAMSUNG Beam Projector Phone - Live from Barcelona @MWC
By The ELECTRONIC GEEKS - Posted 02.27.2012
Barcelona is already delivering amazing products. The Galaxy Beam isn’t Samsung’s first pico projector-phone combination, but it’s the first running Android, so it’s on our radar.
The Gingerbread phone packs a 15-lumen lamp capable of displaying up to a 50-inch image into a body that’s not too much larger than a standard phone, though the other specifications aren’t anything to write home about. The Samsung Galaxy Beam was announced via press release prior to Mobile World Congress, which doesn’t officially begin until Monday.
Aside from the projector, the Beam packs a 4-inch, 800×480 LCD (not Super AMOLED) display, a 1Ghz dual-core processor and 8GB of internal memory, plus an open MicroSD card slot. Unfortunately connectivity is limited to HSPA.
For cameras you get a 5MP rear and 1.3MP front-facing cam – not bad, considering how much extra hardware needs to be crammed in there. The yellow-accented body is 12.5mm thick, again, impressive considering the integrated hardware.
A 2000mAh battery is slightly larger than normal, but who knows how long it’ll last in projector mode.
Gingerbread is the order of the day, with Samsung’s standard flanked home button configuration for navigation purposes. There isn’t a whole lot of information on how the projector mode will work – Samsung isn’t even saying what resolution it has, beyond “high definition”.
We’ll be sure to check out the Galaxy Beam at Samsung’s booth on the show floor later this week. For that and other news, keep a tab tuned to our Mobile World Congress portal.

SHOW: ROYAL OAK 40 Years / AUDEMARS PIGUET SHOW
Posted by Swiss Watch Authority / Shows - Posted 02.24.2012
Design, photography, sound and film come together for a stellar Royal Oak 40th anniversary worldwide exhibition. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Audemars Piguet’s iconic timepiece Royal Oak, the world’s first ever luxury sports timepiece which sparked a complete paradigm shift in the watch industry, the Swiss Manufacture from Le Brassus in the VallĂ©e de Joux has put together a unique, ephemeral exhibition.
Using design, photography, sound and film from three unequivocally 21st century artists, Sebastien Leon Agneessens, Quayola and Dan Holdsworth, the Manufacture has curated an exhibition of 100 exceptional timepieces set against the backdrop of a stage that underscores Audemars Piguet’s origins, mastery and artistry.
These rare watches, from the very first Royal Oak in 1972 to the latest models unveiled at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, Geneva in January 2012, will be revealed in a series of exhibitions showcasing the brand’s ability to innovate and create. Following Audemars Piguet’s recent partnership with the American Patrons of Tate (an independent charity that supports the Tate Galleries in the UK), this not-to-be-missed exhibition will commence its worldwide tour in New York on March 21st at Park Avenue Armory. Open to the public for four days only, the exhibition will then continue in five key cities and captivating artistic venues around the globe throughout 2012.
To break the rules, you must first master them - 40 years ago, Audemars Piguet broke all rules of fine watchmaking when in 1972 it introduced the ground-breaking design of the Royal Oak, the first luxury sports watch in Haute Horlogerie. 40 years on, the four characteristics that defined this timepiece and the luxury watch industry are even more than ever recognisable; the octagonal bezel fixed with the hexagonal screws, one of the thinnest selfwinding movements, the seamlessly integrated to the case bracelet and the tapisserie pattern on the dial.
This exhibition - created, developed, and globally executed by MA3 Agency - captures and illustrates how the Royal Oak became the icon it is today, by reinterpreting the origins and modernity of Audemars Piguet through the innovative and contemporary perspective of artists Sebastien Leon Agneessens, Quayola and Dan Holdsworth. The exhibition installation, photography, sound and film of the three artists create an ambience that is sure to immerse every visitor deep in the Vallée de Joux, the birth place of Haute Horlogerie in Switzerland, while also illustrating its story like it has never been shown before.
The VallĂ©e de Joux in the Swiss Jura mountains has for millennia been a harsh and unyielding environment, a place of raw nature and unforgiving climate. It was not until the sixth century that monks first settled in the VallĂ©e as they saw in its austere surroundings a place of serenity and spirituality. It is also the home of Audemars Piguet since 1875, in the village of Le Brassus. The early watchmakers worked the land during summer while during winter, by the even, Northern Light, they concentrated on mastering the most complex mechanisms known to watchmakers. Throughout the centuries, the pursuit of excellence and building a long tradition in mastery and artistry in fine watchmaking have been values that have remained at the core of Audemars Piguet’s existence until today.
Sebastien Leon Agneessens, the creative mind behind the overall design of the exhibition, drew his inspiration from the origins of the brand in Le Brassus. Hundreds of tubular sticks of different heights symbolising the forests of the valley area are treated as organ-like sound sculptures surrounding the exhibition area, which is made to resemble a fragmented mineral rock typically found in the VallĂ©e de Joux and symbolizing Audemars Piguet. The angular and multi-faceted exterior of each of the fragments and its dark reflective metal surface inspired by the Royal Oak creates a natural contrast with the wooden interior which reflects Audemars Piguet’s long tradition and humble origins.
Each of these fragmented units is a journey of discovery of the origins and savoir-faire of the brand. Apart from 100 iconic timepieces and invaluable memorabilia dating back to the beginning of the 70s, the visitors will also have the opportunity to visit a watchmaker’s area including a brocading dial machine where they could closely observe the artistry of Audemars Piguet’s craftsmen.
The exhibition also carries dedicated areas displaying images taken by photographer Dan Holdsworth and film, by digital artist Quayola.
The contemporary lens of photographer Dan Holdsworth captures the terrain of the VallĂ©e de Joux and its special – cosmic – relationship to time. He documents the Valley at its stillest hours, capturing the ancient forests and glacial topography under the celestial presence of mist or moon to convey the extraordinary temporal significance vested in the landscape. This incredible link between nature, man and his creations, the complex movements that have become the beating hearts of each Audemars Piguet timepiece, continues to live in Le Brassus of the 21st century and inspires the watchmakers of today as they pursue their never-ending quest to unravel the mysteries of nature. One of these images has been selected for the new branding campaign of Audemars Piguet, launched worldwide beginning of January 2012.
Quayola's work for Audemars Piguet 40-years exhibition is a study and celebration of ‘matter’ itself, the substance of all physical objects. The installation focuses on a continuous transformation and metamorphosis of matter: from the grace, complexity and unpredictability of geological forms, to the perfection, beauty and precision of man-made objects of art. Through a process of continuous mutation and metamorphosis it explores simultaneously classical art, 1970s sculpture and contemporary digital aesthetics. Specific sculpture's have been reinterpreted by the artist as icons of man's craftsmanship, reflecting on the classical view of man's mastery over matter.
The year-long celebrations of one of the most iconic timepieces in the word of Haute Horlogerie will take place for a short time only, in iconic buildings of key cities around the world. The exhibition, open to the public, will stop in Milan, Paris, Beijing, Singapore and Dubai.
For more information on the exhibitions, please visit the Royal Oak 40th anniversary microsite (http://www.audemarspiguet.com/ro40y), launched worldwide on March 6th 2012.

SPOTS : Review Restaurant, Bar, Lounge Review - Maté Lounge - Georgetown, DC
Maté
3101 K ST NW
Washington, D.C. 20050
(202) 336 - 2006
www.matelounge.com
Situated less than a block from the popular Georgetown movie theater, Maté is a fairly priced, upscale Sushi bar that is favored by movie-goers looking for some Sake after a terrible movie, or GW students ready to begin a night on the town by stuffing sushi rolls down their gullets. Maté is decadent, lush, and entirely unexpected in Georgetown.
Its interior design sets a sexy yet sophisticated atmosphere for diners, completed with all red decor, luxe Panton spiral lamps, red Luna chairs, and a fairly large sleek aluminum bar.
They serve Japans Best sake hand in hand with their mouth watering Latin sushi, which in part is a great combination to start your night. Monday through Friday from 5 - 7PM is Mate's happy hour, including half priced sushi, $6 cocktails and $4 beers.
Apparently many Senators have been spotted here at this establishment, as well as a few well known athletes (DeAngelo Hall of the Redskins) according to several guest reviews.
If you plan on dining here on a weekend night, make sure to call ahead for reservations as it tends to be a bit of a problem finding an open table.
Reccomendations:
- The Volcano Roll: Including a torched crab concoction.
- Chi Che Spicy Roll: Shrimp tempura with avacado and cucumber, topped with salmon and spicy pepper, toasted to perfection.
- The K-31 Tropical Roll: Mango and salmon wrapped in corn masa & nori with quinua.
Maté is open every night of the year, from 5 PM until last call, where most of the wait staff is fairly easy on the eyes and will usher your drunken, stuffed body out of their establishment with a smile and a sexy wink (although maybe you hallucinate that last part after several Sake intakes).

MOBILE : Mozilla May Rock Our World (AGAIN)?
By The PRODUCT Authority - Posted 02.24.2012
Mozilla surprised us last summer when it announced plans for its Boot to Gecko mobile OS.
Now, it looks like the project has some industry support, with CTO Brenden Eich tweeting that the company will make a partner announcement at MWC this month.
There are no details right now as to who might be involved, but given that developer support is already there (the operating system is based on existing web standards, after all), the hopes are that this could indicate vital operator, or even hardware manufacturer backing.
Another encouraging development is the first sighting of the platform's Gaia UI, further suggesting the project might well meet its planned Q2 release target. It doesn't stray too far from the Android / iOS model that we're already familiar with, but give the source link a swipe if you want to see more.
We can't wait to see the final product and LG seems to be the very first hardware manufacturer for this new concept mobile platform.

SPOTS : Restaurant, Bar, Lounge Review - Barcode Restaurant - Washington, DC
Barcode Restaurant, Bar, and Lounge

Providing lunch, happy hour (with amazing specials ranging from $4-7 priced drinks), dinner, and late night festivities, Barcode is the place that constantly provides satisfaction to the palates of dining guests and night crawlers looking for a great night out on the town. Located just a block from Farragut West metro station, Barcode provides something exciting and different every day of the week:

Brazilian Ipe furnishings white marble walls, and immense sliding glass door panels bring a sense of modernity whenever you take a look around this fine establishment. Lounges are fully stocked with projectors and couches, as well as a 45 ft bar and massive booths. Its dining area that is normally packed during the day/evening is skillfully converted into a raging dance floor at night.
Barcode appears to rarely, if never, disappoint. A personal favorite is Friday nights with DJ Saam, as the place is crawling with a mix of college students and young professionals, letting their hair down after a stressful week and “raising the roof” to DJ Saam’s eclectic and always enjoyable spins. Another bonus for Fridays: if you get there early enough before the conversion from restaurant to night club, you can enjoy a gut-busting Pesto Pizza or a grilled Atlantic Salmon Fillet, and replace those calories with shots of Kamikaze and fattening sex-like music for your eardrums.
All in all, I’m very impressed with Barcode, and it’s apparent that most of the DC metropolitan area agrees.

CIGAR REVIEW - Smoking a 1926 padron box pressed. This little something is quite a deal.
It is a tiny little cigar with some serious dynamite...
You can also apreciate the beautiful view from the 51th floor at the Epic Downtown Miami ( Blurred lights ).
Final grade : 85-86% with a special note on the ash hability... This little block press cigar generates a wide 1 1/2 inches ash... Competing with "Don Carlitos" blends without problem... Great smoke.

SECURITY : ACCESSORIES TO HAVE, COLOSIMO DOTTLING MINI SAFE & HUMIDOR
By Swiss Watch Authority / Watch Winders & Lifestyle - Posted 01.18.2012 (HAPPY ANTI SOPA DAY ALL!)
COLOSIMO
“Big Jim” Colosimo (1878–1920) was already a gangster legend during his lifetime in Chicago’s underworld. At the turn of the twentieth century, the mobster boss paved the way for other underground notables such as Al Capone.
To protect their customers’ assets from criminals such as him, US banks of the time installed massive vaults with huge round doors and highly complex lock mechanisms. The steel doors with radial bolts made unauthorized access to these high-security vaults practically impossible.
Inspired by these unique examples of American locksmith artisanship from the days of the Prohibition, Döttling has constructed – on a scale of 1:13 – the world’s smallest safe: Colosimo.
The highly decorative tabletop safe offers not only the external delight of simple lines, glossy finished steel surfaces, and a solid presence. When the door of the Colosimo is opened – only after entering a 3-digit personal code, of course – the sight is particularly striking. This is when the smoothly functioning, intricate locking mechanism is revealed, an aesthetic gem, as masterfully crafted as the inner workings of a fine clock.
Colosimo is the result of three years of development, which we at Döttling like to call “haute safeology.” It can be equipped alternatively with a Döttling precision watch winder or with a cedar wood humidor insert and integrated air humidifier. This makes it the proud custodian of the most precious items of its new owner, who will repeatedly be tempted to celebrate the mechanical spectacle of opening the door. Colosimo is the world’s smallest fully functional high security safe.
The following special features make it one of a kind:
- Hand-crafted from the best German steel (stainless)
- Special armored protection (as in our regular safes)
- Mineral glass to protect the safe mechanism
- 3-digit combination lock mounted on the outside of the door
- 16 radial, specially hardened locking bolts
- 32 gold-plated precision gearwheels
- Decorative pearlage on the inner door
- High-gloss lacquered black base
- Mounting set for table or furniture tops (optional)
Interior fittings:
- Integrated Döttling watch winder (mains or battery-operated)
- Humidor with integrated air humidifier
WATCHES : GREUBEL FORSEY, POST SIHH 2012 TOURBILLON 24 SECONDES IN BLUE
Posted by Swiss Watch Authority / SIHH Watch Pick - Posted 01.24.2012
Greubel Forsey presents the Tourbillon 24 Secondes Contemporain
Greubel Forsey launches the Tourbillon 24 Secondes Contemporain , which is characterised by its round case and the emphasis on the technical aspects of the movement, particularly the tourbillon.
With the Tourbillon 24 Secondes Contemporain, Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey have once again challenged the frontiers of horological architecture in three-dimensions.
The depth of vision is enhanced for the first time at Greubel Forsey by the royal blue finish of the plates and bridges. The Tourbillon 24 Secondes Contemporain is a unique edition of 33 pieces featuring a titanium movement and platinum case.
An Expression of Architecture
The aim from the very start of its development was to offer a three dimensional view within a circular backdrop highlighting the beauty of Greubel Forsey’s Tourbillon 24 Secondes mechanism.
Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey were guided in their architectural and technological creativity by a desire to achieve aesthetic balance in every dimension. The distinctive 12 o’clock index in relief is an example of the innovative spatial management of the components within this architectural study.
A transparent synthetic sapphire tourbillon bridge gives a captivating and hypnotic impression of the regulator floating in mid-air and underlines one of the highly creative challenges which are to be found throughout the timepiece.
And what makes it individual to every eye yet brings it a perfect harmony is the marriage of simplicity and complexity.
Royal Blue
The Tourbillon 24 Secondes Contemporain is distinguished by the magical royal blue finish of the titanium movement juxtaposed with the flamboyance of the tourbillon.
This unique colour recalls to mind the ocean’s abyss and strengthens the depth of architecture of the movement.
The purity of this intense blue finish, achieved through a special oxidation process is the fruit of considerable research and testing and, shimmering in an infinite range of hues according to the light, gives the timepiece an unparalleled vivacity.
The Tourbillon 24 Secondes
This timepiece houses Greubel Forsey’s third fundamental invention, the Tourbillon 24 Secondes: a highly-efficient fast-rotating – 24-second revolution – tourbillon cage inclined at 25 ° which minimises negative effects of gravity on the oscillator, particularly in stable positions.
Technical details
The movement comprises 267 components, 88 for the tourbillon cage which weighs 0.39 grams and is powered by two coaxial mainspring barrels in series that provide a power reserve of 72 hours.
The oscillator features a variable inertia balance with Phillips terminal curve beating at 3Hz / 21,600 APH.The titanium plate and bridges feature a royal blue anodized oxide treatment and are hand finished with straight graining and spotting.
Bridges in nickel silver with nickel-palladium finish are frosted and straight-grained with hand polished bevels. The tourbillon bridge is transparent synthetic sapphire while the tourbillon cage is in titanium. The hour and minute dial is in synthetic sapphire while small seconds dial and power reserve indicator are in gold.
The platinum case measures 43.5 mm in diameter by 15.2 mm high and features domed synthetic sapphire crystals on the dial side and display back. The blue alligator strap is hand-stitched with a platinum 950 folding clasp.

ADC - Donovan House Rooftop
1155 14TH Street
Washington, DC 20005
Situated discreetly on the rooftop of Donovan House, ADC provides visitors and Washington, D.C., members with a resort-like retreat, perched high above the bustling city streets of our nation’s capitol. ADC’s bar menu features fare from the hotel’s signature restaurant ZENTAN, specialty cocktails, and an extensive wine list, making it ideal for an early cocktail or a late-night rendezvous in a beautiful setting. A selection of the Zentan menu is also available at ADC. During the daytime the pool is reserved for guests, with the pool bar open to guests and locals in the evening hours.
The rooftop of the Donovan House is a magical wonderland in the summer — or is that the heatstroke? Remember, folks, drink water! Whether the giant wise caterpillars were dehydratio hallucinations or not, it’s true that ADC (an initialism for Above DC), the Donovan House’s rooftop bar, has the two most important summer staples: a pool, and frozen cocktails.
The icy concoctions ($10) will come in various flavors that will change over the summer at the bartender’s whim. There’s also a summer-only menu of casual Asian dishes — sweet and spicy chicken wings, sushi rolls and summer rolls ($11-$14) and sangria and punch on offer as well for a more casual summer affect. Remember: you’re by a pool, on a roof. No running and not too much tequila. And no swimming for an hour after you eat.
ADC is open through Labor Day, Monday through Saturday 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. and on Sundays from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Make sure to get in touch with them (via Facebook or on Twitter @Donovan_House) before you head over there — they do a lot of private events and it’s awkward to walk over there with your towel and get rebuffed.
The Livin’ Is Easy: Summer brings with it a multitude of seasonal happy hours. Two new ones in midcity are DC Noodles (1412 U St. NW) and Rice (1608 14th St. NW) which both offer $4 wine every day from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. — DC Noodles has $4 sake as well.
Great place but hard to get in if you are NOT a door breaker!
